Berkeley MDes

Developing curriculum and mentoring at the intersection of design and technology

The Berkeley MDes program—jointly offered by the College of Engineering and College of Environmental Design—prepares students to address complex technological challenges through design. My involvement began during the program's formative years, bringing industry experience in emerging technologies to complement the academic foundation.
- UC Berkeley Master of Design (Berkeley MDes)
- Jacobs Institute of Design Innovation

Curriculum Development

Co-developed Technology Design Foundations (DES INV 202), a core course in the MDes curriculum. Created a prototyping framework that balanced technical implementation with design thinking, enabling students to rapidly explore interactive technologies while maintaining focus on user needs and system thinking.

Educational Impact

This integrated approach to design education helped students develop both technical capabilities and strategic thinking. The curriculum connected industry realities with academic rigor, preparing graduates to lead technological innovation with a human-centered perspective.

Engagement

Extended impact beyond classroom teaching through complementary roles:
- MDes Alumni Design Fellow at the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation
- Faculty Admissions Committee member shaping incoming cohorts
- Design critique participant for semester showcases
- Workshop leader for specialized topics in AIoT, Speculative Design and others
- Mentoring students
